Indicator stalk
I took my 89 998cc indicator stalk apart to fix a broken wire to the horn. Horn now works but indicators don't. Does anyone know where all the springs and ball bearing go. I am at a loss as to how the parts make the contacts in the switch. The indicators worked fine before, no problems with any other switches now.

on the indicator side there are three wires and above that there should be a pice of metal that resembles a flint from a ciggy lighter a spring goes on top of that and then a small light greenish cap on top the spring ,ball bearing and spare green cap go on the opposite side hope that helps.

Hi thanks for the info. I wondered where the 'flint' went. Now all working ok.

According to the wiring diagram, the light at the end of the stalk is on a separate feed from the flasher unit terminal 'P'. The wire colour is Light Green/Purple.
So you'll have to get a voltmeter and start at the flasher unit, and trace that wire all the way to the end of the stalk.

Time to get yourself a Haynes manual, I think!
Here you go:
B: wire colour Green, is a live feed from the fusebox
P: wire colour LightGreen/Purple, is the feed to the tiny bulb at the end of the stalk
L: wire colour Light Green/Brown, is the feed to the actual switch
I know from experience (and also being partially colour-blind) that it can be quite difficult to tell those last two apart when the wires have faded after 50-odd years.
If your actual indicators are working normally, then it's just the Light Green/Purple wire you need to check.

Indicators wont work...help!
Got home and found out (because of flashers) my indicators are not working...no light at all. Have checked the fuses and they are all ok. when you switch them on, as the indicator stalk moves up, it moves the windscreen wiper stalk as well. So I removed the shroud and found there is a crack in the grey plastic thing that fits around the steering column and holds the stalks in place. Maybe this is why my indicators don't work. What is that piece called and would it solve my problem if I got a new one? Tried to look at what happens when you move the indicator stalk but I think the workings are insideand I don't know how to get a look inside! HELP PLEASE!!

indicators...
thanks mate, i have replaced both the flasher relays and the hazard light switch and still no joy!
i was thinking it was the switch at the indicator stalk because when i disconnect the 'connector plug' from the indicator stalk and put the hazard light switch on, both sets of hazards come on but very quickly...however when everything is connected up none of the indicators work from the indicator stalk and only the drivers side when the hazard light switch is on...... baffled!

i was putting my hazard lights switch back in and touched the earth wire (on the left side) on to the metal on the dash...spark...oops! anyway, seems to have blown something... when i switch the hazard switch on only the driver side hazard lights come on... also the indicators dont work at all now from the indicator stalk... i have checked the fuse in the fuse box and also the 2 in-line fuses behind the air filter and they are fine... i have replaced the flasher relays and got a new hazard switch...but still no luck... when i dis-connect the plug from the steering column (with the wires from the indicator stalk) both sides indicators flash very short and quickly... does this mean the switch in the indicator stalk is at fault?

smoke!!!
smoke from electrics is never a good thing! unless youre making an electric smoke machine. maybe the switch contacts have fused themselves. try taking out the fuse that includes the indicator circuit, and putting it back in. also give the stalk a good wiggle. dont know what else to suggest

Fuse Keeps Blowing
If its been raining recently you could check whether water has seeped into the bulb holders this could short circuit the bulb contacts and blow the fuse. Otherwise check the condition of the indicator stalk switch - these have been known to break down again causing a short circuit when the switch is thrown.

finally done it!
I finally got my act together and replaced the indicator. I was relieved to find the w/wiper stalk could just be unscrewed and transferred over, rather than rivetting. It now self cancels like a good'un - I wish I'd done it years ago!

Indicators will not automatically cancel
My indicators do not automatically cancel. I have noticed that there is a gap between the 2 metal lugs on the steering wheel and the plastic ring on the stalk mech. Is there something missing that goes between?

right,i've put took apart the original hazard light switch and put it back in...the indicators work from the indicator stalk now. new prob now is...when the hazard light switch is on,only the passenger side flashed for a while now its back to only the drivers side flashing (when i put my meter onto the terminals on the indicator stalk, the drivers side gets 10v when flashing but the passenger side terminal only gets 0.15v) OR both side flash very quickly and very dull... any ideas?

Main Beam gone wonky
Easy enough to find in the Minispares Shop - click on Electrics, then Switches/Stalks. I assume its the combined indicator/horn/main beam switch youve broken? Looks like its £38 if its the one on the left, a bit more if its the one on the right. Not cheap, so try a scrappie first!

Fuse keeps Blowing
HHHHMMMM i thought that so i had a look at the bulb casing and the indicator stalk and they all seemed fine. While i was down there i unplugged the reversing lights from the passanger side connection and replaced the fuse and the indicators work now. Ive just gotta find where is shorting out on the reverse lights circuit. Cheers
